European Elections in Austria 2014

Graph above without "Others", i.e.: EU-Stop 2,8%, ANDERS 2,1%, Rekos 1,2%.

On May 25, 2014, European elections took place in Austria for the fifth time. SORA analysed this election on the basis of voter transition data as well as the ORF/SORA/ISA election day survey among 1.200 eligible voters. Important trends of this election are:

  • The conservative ÖVP came in first with a minus of 2,6 percentage points. 48.000 ÖVP votes from 2009 went to the NEOS and 40.000 to the Greens
  • The Socialists held their result from 2009 but did not succeed in attracting a sizeable number of MARTIN ex-voters
  • The list "Hans Peter Martin" (MARTIN) did not run in 2014. 130.000 of its ex-supporters elected the Freedom Party (FP) in 2014, 127.000 stayed at home this time.
  • The Freedom Party improved their very poor result from 2009 by 6,8 percentage points and attracted voters from MARTIN as well as 99.000 non-voters from 2009.
  • The Greens gained 5,2 percentage points and won votes from all the other parties.
  • The NEOS ran for the first time in European Elections. Its voters came mainly from ex ÖVP and MARTIN supporters as well as from non-voters and the Greens.
  • The BZÖ lost almost all of its voters from 2009 when it still had 4,6%.
  • Other parties are not displayed in the animated graphic above. They are the lists EU-Stop (2,6%), ANDERS (2,1%) and Rekos (1,2%).
