Working Conditions

Contact: Mag. Daniel Schönherr

The issues of humane work structuring and innovative labor policies receive increased attention in Austria as well as at the European Union level.

Measures aimed at improving the quality of working conditions require reliable empirical foundation. In 1997 SORA and IFES developed the Austrian working atmosphere index that is being continuously determined and developed ever since. In addition to this global index, SORA’s numerous studies examined the world of employment in its individual professional and occupational groups.

SORA stands for practice-oriented research and tested methodological know-how in questionnaire and indicator development as well as qualitative research. Our studies describe the reality of the world of employment and the subjective work satisfaction and thereby show development potentials and action possibilities. On request, we accompany you beyond research and during planning, evaluation and management of the measures taken.

Key topics:

  • Work satisfaction
  • Working time
  • New forms of employment
  • Stress and strain in the workplace
  • Work and health
  • Educational and employment processes
  • Continuous professional education

Selected projects:

Context analysis and analysis of causes: „Border region comparison in the area of home care and inpatient care in Innviertel/Upper Austria and in Altötting/Bavaria (2009): Commissioned by the official employee representation of Upper Austria and within the scope of an EU funded project, SORA examined the structures of the labour market in the area of care in the cross-border region Innviertel, administrative district Altötting. Based on expert interviews and a comprehensive literature and document analysis in particular the following aspects of the care profession in the region were compared: the structure of the supply of care, educational systems and the cross-border mobility of care personnel. In addition, recommendations are given as to how age management offers in the care profession could be adjusted to the cross-border labour market.

Part-time Employment in Upper Austria (2007): Commissioned by the Austrian Public Employment Service SORA has researched the dream and reality of part-time employment in Upper Austria. One result: personnel managers see part-time jobs as a possibility to strengthen employee loyalty during the various phases of life. However, beyond that personnel managers see hardly any advantages in part-time work.

New Forms of Employment in Vienna (2005): The increase of new forms of employment (“atypical” occupation) opens new labour market chances and individual freedoms, but also carries a series of social risks. This study – commissioned by the city management, department 27 – highlights satisfaction, income situation and professional prospects in respect of new forms of employment in Vienna.
