Social capital as key for successful school-to-work transition?

Wächter, Natalia / Blum, Johanna / Scheibelhofer, Paul (2009): Social capital as key for successful school-to-work transition? Analysing migrant young people’s trajectories and social networks, in: Rachel Brooks (Hg.): Transitions from Education to Work: New Perspectives from Europe and Beyond. Basingstoke: Palgrave MacMillan, S. 63-77.

This chapter is part of a volume that brings together contributions from six countries and aims to highlight the changing nature of young people's transitions from education to work. Through a case study of second-generation migrants in Vienna, Austria, the authors examine factors that may help to explain evidence that children of migrant labourers from the former Yugoslavia and Turkey face problems with educational advancement and are overrepresented in low-income jobs. Their analysis demonstrates that, in order to improve the social situation of these young people, addressing discriminatory contextual factors is critical.
